Many flights are interconnected through Kuala Lumpur and seldom do travellers bother to go out of the airport. We, however, decided to make a quick overnight stopover in KL and didn’t regret it. It felt so good to escape the heat, the chaos and all the difficulties during our 6 weeks in India. Its hard to describe the feeling, but compared to India, Kuala Lumpur City Center seemed somehow sterile, with cute little cafe’s and shopping malls on every corner. We do recommend staying at least 1-2 days to get a feel for this modern Asian city, it’s the perfect destination for shopping and dining along with a few sightseeing highlights.
After India we decided that we deserved some luxury during our 24 hour stop in Kuala Lumpur. We found out that many 5 star hotels come at a reasonable price in the city and after some online research we came across GTower hotel, a luxurious hotel at the heart of Kuala Lumpur that we can personally recommend as a great value for money!
The hotel is conveniently situated just a few steps from Ampang park metro station, so it just took us about 5 minutes to get from the hotel to the famous Petronas Towers, door to door (or just one metro stop). If you’re in the mood for walking it will only take you 15 minutes.
We have to say that GTower hotel was spot on from the beginning to the end. The staff welcomed us with a smile and the reception offers free coffee, tea and fresh lemon water. The hotel has to be one of the most environment-friendly hotels we’ve been to and they are actually Malaysia’s first internationally green-rated building. They even have a special CO2 detector to keep the air properly oxygenated.
The eco friendly aspect is also integrated into the hotel’s stylish design; from the reception, through the gym, the restaurant and finally the rooms, you’ll find hardwood decorations, green plants, warm lightning and elegant black and white photographs of Sabah’s rainforest in Borneo.
This hotel is the perfect getaway for couples, or even backpackers like us, who want to escape the budget hostels for a moment and indulge in luxury. They also focus considerably on business travellers by offering 24 hour service and security, spacious meeting rooms and high speed connectivity throughout the hotel. We were, however, purely there for pleasure and we could not have been more satisfied!
Lets give you a glimpse into our stay in Kuala Lumpur and GTower’s top facilities!
We stayed at the premier room which has the same facilities as the executive room but with nicer views which face the main central business district. The room is very spacious and has all the amenities you might need; a 37 inch LCD screen (with movies on demand), excellent WiFi signal, Mini Bar and an executive work desk space. We especially liked the coffee and tea making facilities, the walk-in wardrobe and the huge rain shower. The bed itself was a little piece of heaven, with a down duvet comforter and a special pillow menu to choose from (we like our pillows a bit dense).
More information about the room here.
When we chose this hotel we were most excited about the infinity pool!
There are two pool areas to choose from, one at the reception and one at the gym, both outdoor infinity pools with great views over the city. The area was really quiet and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. It was very relaxing to dive into the pool and cool off in front of all these giant buildings around you.

The restaurant, called Tanzini, is located on the second top floor. From there you have great views over the city skyline and together with some smooth dinner jazz makes for a very romantic setting. The young chef, Kenneth Loke, seemed to know even better then our own minds what our tastebuds were craving. His background from the Swedish kitchen makes him an expert in Scandinavian cuisine, but at Tanzini he adds his own fresh and exotic ingredients from the Malaysian garden to the mix which made it a special experience for us. We recommend going for the tasting menus; you’ll end up with one goosebump after the other!
The Rooftop Bar
The top floor gives you access to The View Rooftop Bar, a chic, modern, neon-lit bar under the open air. The cocktails here are at a world class level and the variety is endless. Here you can get some really good capirinha (our favourite) made with real cachaça. As the name implies, the views are stunning by night!

Despite our short visit in KL we decided to hit the gym and hit it early. All the equipment seemed to be new and in perfect condition. What we liked the most was how much attention there has been put into natural lighting. The centre of the gym is also beautifully decorated with bamboo sticks which gives a green and healthy touch to the atmosphere. Before breakfast, Andri went wild on the punching bags while Ása joined one of the scheduled “body pumps”.
The gym has it’s own website, check it out here.
For the ones who want to take the luxury all the way or just escape the bustling city life for a while, meet the Sompoton Spa! They offer a variety of treatments, from facial masks to full body massages.
After our gym session we attended the breakfast buffet at The Club. They serve an amazing continental selection here with freshly baked breads and pastry. Andri’s omelette was soft, custard-like and golden yellow…just simply delicious. Ása really enjoyed tasting the exotic fruits that you won’t find in Iceland like starfruit and dragon fruit (luckily though, durian was not one the menu).
After a perfect stopover at GTower hotel we felt completely refreshed with satisfied bellies and ready for our next adventures in Tokyo.
